Deutsch: Am 31. August 2012 16:36 UCT-4 brach ein langer Leuchtfaden aus Sonnenmaterie, der zuvor in die Atmosphäre der Sonne, der Korona, schwebte, ins All aus. Der Koronale Massenauswurf (englisch: coronal mass ejection, CME) erfolgte mit über 900 Meilen pro Sekunde (etwa 1.448 km/s oder 5.214.275 km/h). Der CME war nicht direkt auf die Erde gerichtet, kam aber in Kontakt mit der magnetischen Umgebung der Erde, der Magnetosphäre, und führte in der Nacht vom Montag, dem 2. September zu einer Aurora. Hier wird eine leicht abgeblendete Version der Wellenlängen von 304 und 171 Angström dargestellt. Das Bild wurde zugeschnitten.
English: On August 31, 2012 a long filament of solar material that had been hovering in the sun's atmosphere, the corona, erupted out into space at 4:36 p.m. EDT. The coronal mass ejection, or CME, traveled at over 900 miles per second. The CME did not travel directly toward Earth, but did connect with Earth's magnetic environment, or magnetosphere, causing aurora to appear on the night of Monday, September 3. Le flot de particules expulsé par le phénomène, sans toucher directement la Terre, a créé un champ magnétique très fort qui a interagi avec la magnétosphère terrestre en générant des aurores polaires au cours de la la nuit du lundi 3 septembre 2012.
